DESIGINING A SHOWER?

Whether you are a contractor or a home owner, there are a few things to keep in mind when building a shower so that it will facilitate the best glass installation possible.

  • Probably the most important thing you can do when building a shower is get the walls as straight as possible.  Out of level/plumb is not ideal but can be dealt with.  A bowed wall makes installation difficult especially if you plan to use glass clips.
  • Make absolutely certain that your lower threshold slopes into the shower.  Ideally the curb will slope about 1/4 inch over 6 inches.  This helps to minimize the chance of leaks and keeps the water inside the shower.  If your tile contractor installs a curb that is flat or worse, slopes to the outside of the shower (this is not unheard of), MAKE THEM REMOVE IT AND REPLACE CORRECTLY!

GENERAL SHOWER ENCLOSURE CARE & MAINTENANCE TIPS

  • For the best results, your enclosure should be cleaned with a squeegee or clean dry cloth after exposure to water.
  • Make sure your shower is properly ventilated, especially true for steamer units to release the humidity from the enclosure.
  • Keep the surface clean of any kind of material attachments or contaminants, such as dust, particles, dirty liquid, finger prints or stains.
Abrasive Cleaner Warning

Do not use abrasive or acid-based cleaners when cleaning your shower enclosure. There are some powerful cleaners on the market today. Abrasive or acid-based cleaners can scar the metal or glass of your shower enclosure. Damage may not occur with a single application but repeated use of harsh cleaners will deteriorate glass and aluminum extrusions over time

Frameless shower enclosures cannot be guaranteed against leakage.  Proper shower construction can virtually eliminate any possible leakage.  It is very important when building a shower that a proper slope be maintained across the threshold to ensure that any water that does escape will be directed back into the shower.  Also, excessive water pressure or high flow rate shower heads/sprayers will increase the likelihood that water makes its way outside the shower during operation.
